A way in advance heads-up so y’all can mark your calendars - The 6th Annual Western PA Solo Canoe Rendezvous will be held on the first full weekend of June in 2013. This is Friday (May 31) through Saturday/Sunday June 1,2. It will be held again at the usual site at Cooper’s Lake Campground in Portersville PA. The Rendezvous is a gathering of solo canoe enthusiasts in particular (though tandems are by no means excluded). It features various manufacturers and designers of solo canoes with demo models of their boats available for test-paddling; demonstrations of, and informal instruction in, FreeStyle paddling; assorted programs on various aspects of canoe design, construction, and use in the real world; food; sometimes some live entertainment (depends on who we can lean on) on one or both evenings (Fri and Sat)(perhaps a few members of the FreeStyle String Band shall be in attendance); Dead Fish Polo; a Candlelight Paddle on Saturday evening if the weather smiles; pick-up paddling trips on local streams/rivers; informal gear/boat sales and swaps; a pot-luck Vegetarian dinner on the Friday night that can’t be beat: and Goodness Knows Whatall. It is an opportunity to immerse yourself in solo canoes for 60 some hours (or more) to the exclusion of all other reality. An event which is informal and laid-back to a fare-thee-well. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own solo craft, since at least part of the experience is being able to look over (and perhaps paddle) a large array of classic solo canoes that you just don’t see all that often. There is no charge for the Event per se, though the Campground does charge a modest fee for Day-Trippers, and of course assesses a fee for camping. This early in the game precise details as to scheduling, who will be attending, and the like are by no means set. We will provide such info as it becomes available on the Rendezvous’ website wpascr.org so check with us periodically. That website will also contain info on directions to find us, and a link to the campground’s site so you may contact them directly as regards camping reservations (though there’s many acres of space in the area where the Rendezvous is held, and reservations are generally not really necessary). And speaking of the website – one of our attendees in 2011 was Nelson Hermance, from the Chicago area. Nelson’s business, Fischer Software, is (among other things) the creation, design, and maintenance of websites. Nelson and Fischer very graciously offered to rehab/redesign the site, and make a number of changes, and continues to maintain the site for us. For this Becky and I could not be more grateful. The archived pictures from our first five years give one a pretty good idea of what the event is like. Thanks Much, Nelson and Fischer Software. So please do come – like the sign says, it’s a Very Nice Affair Indeed.

We wanted to confirm the weekend for the upcoming rendezvous 2013. We see on the home site, it is scheduled to begin May 31st. Looking on Coopers Lake Campground Site we see they have the 'solo canoe' event for June 7th. Can someone confirm either date?

May 31 June 1/2 is correct. Fred at Cooper's had simply gotten the dates wrong. No problems. We're good to go

All is good for 2013. We know that Hemlock Canoe, Colden Canoe, and Dogpaddle Canoe and Woodworks will be on hand. Not yet sure about Placid Boatworks yet - they are still recovering from their disastrous winter fire, but are back in production again. Our local Boat shop, Wind 'n Water Boatworks will be represented, and we know a number of our FreeStyle friends will be along.
If there are enough folks around on the Friday, and they are interested, we may try a pick-up trip on one of our local waterways - this assuming there is decent water of course. It has been an on-and-off spring in that regard here.
The Vegetarian pot-luck is on for the Friday night, say about 6 or so, probably at the Big Top. Everyone is welcome, and don't worry a whole lot if you lack a contribution - there's always tons of stuff, and as I say, everyone is welcome.
We will have some sort of "continental" fare on the Saturday AM (coffee and stuff too), as well as lunch fixin's and dinner on Saturday. These are all handled by a local caterer. We'll have more precise details about all of that shortly, but for now, be assured that there will be food around if you'd rather not deal with your own the whole time. Expect some stuff on the Sunday AM as well - as I say details shortly.

Plan to be there Friday with my better half Linda and likely stay a couple of days extra to take in some area sights and or paddling.
Bringing our Swift Otter and leaving room on the bar for an experienced Wildfire, Starfire or maybe an Esquif Echo in need of a good home if something of the like is available.
Would be glad to offer up, if there is any interest, a short Canadian Style paddling session Saturday or Sunday.
Look forward to the weekend and only too happy to have others doing the cooking.
Cheers, Rick

I'll be there either Thursday Eve. or Friday AM. I'm bringing a demo Dogpaddle Jun Bug and an Illusion. I'll also have a case of paddles, including a few demos and 2nds.
Did you get any water overnight? We've been getting deluged since yesterday morning. My ponds are both spilling water from the overflows and there's more moving in right now.
